Formally named The Commercial the Pub was bought by Alfred Owen Otley in 1975 from Ely Brewery and was renamed The Otley Arms on the 17th of August that year, thus starting The Otley Empire, and being one of only two of the last remaining pubs in Britain named after the family that own and run them (to our knowledge).
In the Early years the pub was run by Alf himself and his second son Robert until the 1st of April 1980 when Paul, the eldest son and his wife Jan moved back from Whitland where they ran the local rugby club, to take over the reins with Samantha aged 5 and Matthew aged 3 months in tow.
Jan and Paul ran the pub for 35 years, taking it from strength to strength, expanding and growing the business as well as the premises whilst raising their children within the pub walls. During their reign the pub became affectionately known as “O Block” amongst the staff and students of the nearby university and many a good time was had by all.
Towards the end of 2014 Matt and his fiancé Gabby decided (gabby was dragged kicking and screaming) that they would like to give it a go (stupidly I may add!!) So from the 1st of May 2015 Mabby Pub Company trading as The Otley Arms took on a lees of the premises from Otley Ltd and gave the pub a colossal face lift.
The Otley Arms is now set to be a food led operation with a 50 seater restaurant in the Oldest part of the pub, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t room to accommodate the drinkers…oh no! There is also a separate lounge area, a cosy corner up by the new log burner as well as an inviting bar and a conservatory at the rear.Discover our menu
